What Do We Do When Doubt Invades Us?
Doubt
What do we do when doubt creeps in? When questions begin to flood our thoughts and all of a sudden we go from confident to confused. What happened to the clarity?
This week I sat at my desk with my head in my hands, overwhelmed and confused. How did I get so much on my plate and how in the world was I going to get it all done? Have you ever felt overwhelmed enough that it made you begin to doubt what you had been so confident in?
As I sat in the quiet, dark of the morning I opened my bible and prayed, "Father I need your word, your truth, your guidance and your wisdom. Show me the way."
In the beginning
In Genesis 2 God had just finished creation and had placed Adam in the Garden of Eden. He specifically commanded Adam, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." (vs 16-17 NIV) And then God went on and made woman so Adam would not have to be alone. So what does this have to do with our doubts you might be thinking...
Where Doubt Comes From
In the very first verse of Genesis 3 it says: Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, "You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" And in that moment the serpent injected doubt and confusion into Eve's mind.
She replied to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" (Genesis 3:2-3)
"You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. (vs 4-6)
From Confident to Confused
What had happened to the clarity of the word God had spoken to Adam? The serpent lied to Eve, he deceived her and in the matter of a few minutes she went from confident in what God had said to confused and led astray.
The same happens to us.
One little injection of doubt - a comment from a family member, something we overheard at work, or just a crazy busy day that tells us we don't really have what it takes to walk in the word God spoke to us.
Pressing In
Beloved, let's not give way to the serpent and let him lead us astray. Doubt and confusion are just a few of the crafty tools he uses to get us off track.
If you are pressing into change, determine to accomplish your goals.
If you are praying for something that seems impossible right now, keep praying and believing in the God of miracles.
If you are taking steps to clean up your soul and find balance in the everyday, take the next step with Jesus.
Walk in Confidence
Whatever it is that you are doubting and beginning to question, stand firm and be confident in the word the Lord spoke to you.
Let's keep our eyes directly on Jesus, our hearts tied to His word and His truth, and our thoughts confident in knowing that with Him ALL THINGS are possible. (Matt 19:26)
With love,
