I ran into the store a couple nights ago to pick up some of our essentials and I was surprised by how busy the parking lot seemed and how many people were out and about. It seems that the hustle and bustle of Christmas has started early this year.
When I got inside, I could tell there were more people than normal cruising up and down the aisles, but I grabbed my cart and headed toward the back of the store where I usually start. When I got to the dairy section to grab a gallon of milk and some creamer there was a little elderly lady trying to get herself some milk too. There were three or four people waiting for her as they had formed somewhat of a line. I watched and waited as she did retrieve her half-gallon of milk while the others seemed to be growing quite impatient. One sighed with a loud heaviness, while another tried to just squeeze past her, while yet another leaned on her cart tapping her fingernails on the handle.
As I stood watching the Spirit brought these verses on love to my mind:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 (NIV)
These are some of the greatest verses on love in the Bible! They are descriptive, giving us what love is but also what it is not. It is easy to become frustrated when we are on a schedule, having our own agenda. But what better time to slow down and show the love living on the inside of us to others?
As we read yesterday that God is love, and in receiving his love we are able to open our hands to acts of love and kindness towards others. It is going to be busy in every store, every checkout line, every parking lot from now until Christmas. Let’s not be rude or self-seeking, but instead plan a few extra minutes and open our hands up to extend the Father’s love.
