Day 6: Christmas is Love

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:7-8 (NIV)

We all have a perception of what we think love is. If you were going to define love, what would you say?

Our perception of love is usually shaped from experiences during our life, good and bad. Some get raised in a home with loving, generous parents while others suffer abuse, loneliness, abandonment, or many other hard circumstances. Some believe they must work for love, earn it. Some don’t believe they are worthy of love at all.

Someone once told me that we can only love others to the degree that we ourselves understand love. I’ve thought about that statement many times over the years as my understanding of what love is has grown and changed. At first, I wasn’t sure I understood, but I believe that we must be willing to let go of what we “think” love is and draw closer to the Father so he can show us what love truly is.

God is love and because he lives in us through the Holy Spirit our perception of what love is doesn’t have to stay based on our past experiences.  I am so grateful that as we press in daily to our relationship with the Father, he will reveal to us a new understanding of what true love is.  It isn’t something we earn, or something we work for, but given freely to us through believing in Jesus.  God sent us the best example of true love when he sent Jesus into the world.

We believe that there is no better time than this Christmas to open our hearts to true love. Christmas is all about love…and God is love.
