Day 20: The Promise of a Child

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;

I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Genesis 12:1-3 (NIV)

Have you ever gone outside on a dark and clear night to look up at all the stars? One night, God called Abram out to look up to the heavens and count the stars in the sky. And God spoke to him and said, “So shall your offspring be.” (Genesis 15:5)

Abram was 75 years old when God called him out of his home country and told him to go to the land that he would show him. It would have been so easy for Abram to say no, to come up with an excuse; he was too old, he had no children to carry on after his death, or that he was comfortable in his homeland. But he didn’t…Genesis 12:4 tells us that he left just as the LORD had told him.

The obedience of this one man changed the course of history for all of us. He was willing to go into the unknown and trust God for what he couldn’t see. And God fulfilled his promise. When Abram was 100 years old (25 long years later) his wife gave birth to a son. It was through this genealogy line that our Savior, Jesus, was born. All because God kept his promise to a man who believed that he would.

When we are obedient to the call of God, it doesn’t just affect us, but all those God intends it to. He is faithful to His promises, even when they don’t happen in our time frame. May we never lose hope in the things God has promised.

Abram believed that God would bless him, and in turn bless us with a child…a child who came on Christmas to be the King of the world.
