Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
As Christmas is quickly approaching the time is coming to gather with family, friends and loved ones. For most families or friends, I think it is safe to say that there have been tough days; words said, actions taken, and feelings hurt. Especially as families grow and we get married and have in-laws and children and everyone with different traditions, opinions, and personalities.
Something that we have learned through experience is that the relationship should always come first. It should always come before the problem. When we put the problem first, our pride takes over and we strive to be “right”, and words get said that cut deep and leave wounds that can take months or even years to heal.
Let’s spend some time this year preparing our hearts for when we do gather with family and friends that we can truly clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Let’s open our hearts to bear with each other and forgive…forgive as the Lord has forgiven us. Let’s put our differences aside so that we are able to treasure the moments and the memories made.
And above all else, let us put on love, which binds all virtues together in perfect unity.
