Day 12: Loving Those Different Than Us

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace-loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.

James 3:17-18 (NLT)

The boys begged and begged to get their bunnies out and play in the yard.  So, we gathered them up from the barn and hauled them to the yard.  It is always difficult to keep the boys cats out of the yard while the bunnies are out, so we decided to try to co-mingle them.  As we watched out the kitchen window, they played and jumped and chased after one another as if they were made to co-exist.  Different, yet so much the same.

It made me think about us, all of us that make up the people of the world…different, yet so much the same.  We may look different, talk different, wear different clothes, even smell different, but how different are we really?  We tend to look differently at people who aren’t like us; the ones with all the tattoos and piercings, or the ones with blue color in their hair, or perhaps the ones that wear cowboy boots and tight-fitting jeans, or the one in the Jesus shirt we pass by in the department store.

We are so quick to judge others.  To form an opinion based on only what our eyes can see.  But God had once told Samuel about the great King David, “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

The truth is, we are all different.  Every single one of us.  God made each of us unique, but he also made us in his image.  (Genesis 1:27) So we really aren’t all as different as we might think.  Maybe on the outside, but not on the inside.

Let’s receive the wisdom from above, which is first of all pure, this Christmas season so that we may be peace-loving, gentle at all times, willing to yield to others, and full of mercy.  Let’s show no favoritism and love more sincerely.
