Day 11: Love Each Other

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

John 13:34-35 (NIV)

Christmas is usually a time when we go out, we buy gifts for all our family and friends and others whom we cherish. But how many of us go out and buy some people Christmas gifts because we feel like we have to? We all have “those people” in our lives, right?! The ones hard to get along with, hard to buy for, hard to love.

Jesus tells his disciples here in these verses to love each other and he desires for us to as well. Notice here Jesus doesn’t say to love others when we feel like it, or when they are finally nice to us, or when it aligns with some sort of benefit for us. He says to love them just as He has loved us. Love them when it’s hard, when they aren’t appreciative or very nice.

We can all be hard to love at times, but at the center of God’s heart is love. He loves us not because he has to, but because he can’t help it. He sees past all our insecurities, our failures, our short-comings, and sees us for who He created us to be. When we choose to love others like the Father loves us, we get to be a part of the bigger story. One bigger than us. When we love “those people” out of a genuine, heartfelt, action kind of love, we have the opportunity to share His love story written for us and for them.

Let’s be a part of “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” this Christmas. (Matthew 6:10 (NIV))
