Are You On A Roller Coaster Ride of Emotions?

My emotions have been all over the place the last seven weeks, much like anyone else’s I presume. I have gone from the onset of fear, to grateful for the home time, to restless, to sort of blah when the cold weather hit, to flat over it.  Can you relate?

I’ve been thinking about this crazy emotional roller coaster I’ve been on and how to get off (for my own and my family’s sanity).  I don’t want to slap a band-aid on and fix the surface with quick solutions like we so often do, but I want to get to the root of it so I can experience true healing.  After lots of heart inventory, here is what I’m uncovering…

  • Where is my focus? When I choose to focus on the things of this world – the news, the virus, the numbers, the confinement, the overwhelming task of getting our essentials, etc. – it sends my thoughts into a frenzy.
  • When my thoughts go into a frenzy stress, worry, and anxiety take up territory in my heart.
  • When I allow the stress and worry to take up territory in my heart, it slowly pushes the peace I have out. The peace that Jesus offers is one of a kind (John 14:27) but when I focus on the things of this world over Him, I lose that peace.
  • And when I lose that peace, His peace, my emotions go crazy.

If this roller coaster sounds familiar to you too, maybe you are sitting next to me. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like roller coasters and I want off!

So, can I suggest that in order to find the exit we must re-align our focus?

I lift my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1

When we lift our eyes and focus them on the One where our help comes from, we will gain a fresh perspective as we re-focus on WHO really matters and WHO is in control.  When we choose to focus on Jesus it will re-align our thoughts and His peace will begin to take back the territory in our hearts.

When we re-align our focus, I’m confident we will find the exit gate for the roller coaster.

With love,
