A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD – Isaiah 11:1-2
Have you ever spent much time looking at a tree stump? It’s short, dried out for the most part and appears lifeless. This is pretty much where the family of Jesse (King David’s father) was…cut off, broken and devastated at the time that Isaiah spoke these words from God…spoke a promise of Hope to come. Out of this stump would come forth a shoot…a living Branch that would bear fruit.
What an amazing promise… It leaves me in wonder and awe at the absolute goodness of our heavenly Father. At a time when desolation consumed his people, when the darkness had overwhelmed and overcrowded them, when they were all but destroyed, the promise of Hope came.
There are going to be seasons in our lives that we find ourselves right in the middle of desolation, pain and darkness that overwhelms. We might feel isolated and lonely in our pain but remember that the Father sees us and he hears our cry for help. He sent us a promise…the promise of Hope.
It is such a privilege to get to celebrate the birth of that promise this Christmas season. Let us cling to the hope of Jesus, our promise and Savior of the world.
