Day 3: Selfless Love

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:16-17

Yesterday was a busy day around the Johnston house!  We were all going a hundred as we were getting ready to head out to cut down our very first Christmas tree!  I was making breakfast, talking to my sister, making chili for when we all got back, and Chase was cleaning up the house and doing all the chores outside.  As I stood at the sink  cleaning up the breakfast dishes the boys were running circles in the dining room: Can I draw something?  Can I hang an ornament on the tree?  Can I?  Can I?  Can I?  Chase had just sat down in the living room on the couch, trying to relax for a few minutes and catch the updates on Good Morning Football.

As I called out to him, “honey can you please help the boys cut out their ornament and glue it on their home school advent tree” I felt the weight of asking him to do yet more… and in that moment I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to me one word, “selflessness”.

The greatest gift, the ultimate gift of Christmas was the most selfless gift of all.  God sent his one and only Son to us, to dwell among us, and most importantly to save us.

I believe the Christmas season tends to bring out selflessness in us all.  And it is a great reminder that we can continue that all year, not just at Christmas. Yesterday was a day of abounding blessings for our family.  And it all started because we chose to spend the time.  I encourage you to ask the Father where it is that He would have you spend some time…with family, friends, or maybe a lonely neighbor?  Maybe helping at the local food bank or delivering some meals on wheels.  It is God’s Spirit of love working in our hearts that gives us the desire to reach out, to extend love, to spend  time with those God has put in our lives.

God performed the most selfless act of all by sending his Son, but isn’t that what love is?  Selfless?
