In the morning when I rise, in the morning when I rise, in the morning when I rise just give me Jesus. I can hear the lyrics singing in my heart this morning as I bundle up to make sure that I get this picture of the sunrise….
How magnificent. How the light shines so perfectly. It makes me stop and catch my breath. (It was also -6, felt like -14 degrees when I went out, so that made me grab some air too!) As I stood there taking it in, that moment, I felt God gentle speak in my spirit… “Tana you can choose to look at the darkness, the branches of life running this way and that.” Always trying to clog up my view of the light those dark branches. Things like sickness, loneliness, isolation, or maybe even being overcrowded, too busy, quotas for work, angry words from a spouse, the loss of a loved one. They come in one at a time and start to block our view of the light. Our eyes tend to want to focus on them because they seem closer than the light in the moment. The darkness can come in many forms, some bigger than others and some closer to our hearts, more tender. And it can seem to take up so much space… “Or Tana, you can choose to see the light… that shines so brilliantly fighting against all darkness. My light.”
~ The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5
Our focus everyday, what our eyes and our hearts choose to focus on will be the focal point of our days. It will shape our attitude, our outlook. Our perspectives can change… slowly over time focusing more and more on the dark, even if it happens little by little. Day after day of being home alone can lead us to a place of focusing on loneliness. And the dark branch grows. Or striving for the quota at work day in and day out can lock us in on the stress, the pressure of performance. A dark branch grows. Maybe an argument with a loved one and a tiny darkness branch sprouts. Moms, tired and worn by sick kiddos and running on no sleep and not enough coffee to quite get into the swing of yet another day. A dark branch.
But Jesus came to give us life and to give it abundantly. He is the light.
~ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10
Don’t let the thief steal your light. He is the darkness, the branches that want to creep in and steal the light from our eyes, from our hearts. But Jesus came to give us life and have it to the full!! Not half, not sometimes, and not even when we feel like it. But always. Everyday to the full. His light will trump the darkness. He has already won the battle you are facing today. Press into Him…Focus on the light today, even if it is only tiny… and choose to fight for it day after day and watch as it grows and becomes bigger in your heart, your eyes, your daily life. Magnify Jesus…and let His light shine all over you loved one.
