Who Am I?

Mommy – I’ve never actually tried to count how many times a day I hear it.  But it has to be HUNDREDS.  It comes, over and over and over again.  Mommy.  Mommy!  MOMMY!!! It is so much of  who I am in this season.  My days, my schedule, my time, my energy all revolve around being mommy.  What seems to be defining you right now?  Mom, wife, caretaker, driver, secretary, teacher?

It happens before we even know it.  If we aren’t aware each moment, each day, each time we hear it – Mommy!! – or whatever our “title” seems to be right now it can start to define us.  We start to focus on who we are in this season and not WHOSE we are.  And the titles, those things that are seeming to define us, get heavy and we start to lose sight of our value.

But see, our worth is not tied up in our title.  It is tied up in being rooted and established in Jesus.  He is the author and perfecter of love.  I love the Message translation of 2 Corinthians 21-22 – God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us.  By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge, a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete.  There is no wavering… our identity is a big YES in Jesus.  He is destined to complete us.

We are all masterpieces, created in His image.  (Ephesians 2:10 and Genesis 1:27) We are a beautiful piece of art that He is destined to complete…

Don’t let that title define you.  I encourage you to write down a few scriptures that confirm your identity in Christ and carry them around with you.  Post them on your mirror or hang them by your coffee pot.  (I go back and forth to the coffee pot A LOT!  Ha!)  Here are a few to get your started….

  • Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s masterpiece.  He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
  • Isaiah 41:10 – Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.  Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you.  I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
  • Jeremiah 31:3 – I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love.  With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.
  • Psalm 119:114 – You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.

Write out your own list… the more you read them the more they penetrate your heart the more you will believe them and find your value in Him.  Please share your lists with me!  I would love to hear from you.
